Street Photography with Fujifilm X-H2S & XF 16-80mm
For this day of street photography, I wanted to start with something familiar (downtown Bellevue) and also include something new (the Spring District). So, I started in downtown Bellevue with my Fujfilm X-H2S and XF 16-80mm f.4 and then took the light rail about a mile east to the Spring District. This is a newer mixed used neighborhood with high-tech office building as well as apartments and condos. There’s some very interesting architecture in the Spring District, and the clouds cooperated for some dramatic photos.

Looking for Lessons and Inspiration in Street Photogrtaphy

Pergear 25mm f1 7 First Impressions Lens Review

When Pergear first contacted me about reviewing the 25mm f1.7 for Fujfilm X-System cameras, I almost said “no.” It’s been a very, very long time since I last regularly used manual focus lenses, and I’m more than a little spoiled by the current magic of autofocus systems in modern cameras and lenses. After sleeping on the decision, I decided to say “yes,” as I thought this would be a good opport...

Working Through Street Photography Struggles

How do you deal with your photography struggles? I went out last week to create some street photos and did not have a good time. A couple of days later, my mood and the weather improved and I went out again for some street photography, with pretty much the same result as the first time. I won’t say ...

    I recently got a Viltrox f/1.2 75 mm for Sony that I've never tried for night photography. Wondering how difficult it will be to get sharp, fast autofocus shooting that wide open in low light. Or should I start practicing manual focus (which I've never done before)? Don't trust my own eye to focus!

    This is not too much different than writing. You just need to put the fingers to keyboard (yes, yes, I did start with pen to paper) and put in the craft. And ignore the perfection trap. Inspiration for me follows, but I might have to throw away a couple of working drafts just to clear my head - or go to the same environment at different times of day or seasons for capturing what I am trying to communicate visually with photography.

    Ok, my Northwest photo buddy where do you go now? Fact: all creative types tend to reside on the hamster wheel spinning thru the labels of manic and depressive. It's the nature of the creative soul. During that time we "produce" where we are emotionally. Study the people, not just the photos of those deemed street photoghraphy "elders." (e.g. Saul Leider, Vivian Maer, etc.) It wasn't their technical skill that created their photos, it was their emotional state/skill. Consider diverting your quest from making your photos better, to making your photos you. Just a thought. Bill Two photographers that I follow in this vein are Alex Gilbe (The Photographic Eye) and Allister Benn (Expressive Photographer). Both are long time professionals who openly discuss the emotionality of creativity and its place in your "kit."

    I'm a new photographer with an X-T5 and a Tamron 18-300 as my sole lens. I got it because a major motivation for getting a camera was to get shots I couldn't with my phone. I realized this while on a canoe in the Amazon rainforest and my smartphone failed taking decent shots for probably obvious reasons. I completely agree with spending time with the gear you have to learn what works and what doesn't, and the Tamron is a great learning device for that! So far I've learned that I want something lighter for street photography, that my best shots are around 35-50mm, and that I need a wide compliment for travel. So after a little more experimentation with what I have, I'll likely be picking up the Fuji 50mm f/2 for street and the Rokinon 12mm f/2 as a travel companion for my Tamron. Just sharing my experience. Thanks for the video!

    Very nice images Michael. As far as lenses go, I really enjoy using the XF16-50 (my new toy) for street “stuff”, but more than once I found myself needing the extra reach of the XF16-80, since I have both lenses I can safely say that it’s a first world problem. Needless to say that the XF70-300 is my go-to lens for iguanas and other creatures. Be well.

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto 23 дня назад

      Hi Enrique! The 16-50 is a pretty great lens, but I agree the extra reach of the 16-80 is pretty handy, so worth the extra size/weight to me. Hope you’re safe with the approaching storm!

      @@MSladekPhoto I find that the XF16-50 is great for shooting “from the hip” in close quarters like at a shopping mall, an airport terminal, etc., but for outdoor street stuff it’s definitely the XF16-80.

  • @Josecunyat

    I dont see this review as neutral. Why the sigma is for fun and the fujinon for work. Most of reviews show the sigma to be consistently sharper and the fujinon just to be sharper at times. There is some chromatic aberration which is pretty small and easy to correct. Autofocus looks to be similar. The aperture ring is easy to handle with the camera. The macro capabilities open a range of new posibilities. The optical result is 99% equal. The weigth makes it easier to carry for hours. In every profesional environment I see the sigma giving you better results. I see it makes your work easier. And I see it offer you more options for close ups. What makes the fujinon better for profesionals? What makes the sigma not reach the cut for profesionals? Is this neutral?

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto 23 дня назад

      Hi! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and question. When I did this comparison, I fully specked the Fujinon to be far superior to the Sigma. As I said in the video, that was not my experience. I Think the Sigma is a great value and supremely worthy of consideration as an alternate to the Fujinon. In the year since this video, I have rarely used the Fujinon, and will likely be selling it soon. Thanks again for taking the time to comment. Cheers!

    That is SO tiny! I bet there's a big audience for a manual focus lens that is this small, cute and fun to use. I personally love manual focusing lenses when I want to slow down and "be in the moment." I know it's a story I'm telling myself... but it's fun. Thanks for the video!

      Hey Jerred! It is so tiny… but well made and solid. I agree about the “slowing down” being a story some times. Lol. Hope all is well!

      @@MSladekPhotothank you! I ended up getting it and really like it so far. There is one thing I wonder if you can help me with though. I am still new to my camera/photography, but I don’t understand how to change my aperture with this lens. Unlike the prime lens I have it doesn’t have the ring, so from what I read I should be able to use the front dial to change the aperture. I made sure the lens is not switched to Auto, my camera mode is aperture priority, my front dial is configured correctly in settings, and the f stop is showing in blue on my screen which, according to what I read, means I should be able to manipulate it myself. However when I turn or press the dial it does not change. Any idea what I am doing wrong? 😢 Thanks for your time

      @@elle96425 Hi again! The 18-135 does have have an aperture ring. It's the ring closes to the camera body. Note: it does not have aperture numbers, as this is a variable aperture lens. So, the aperture ring should work to change aperture value! Hope that helps :)

      @@MSladekPhotothank you SO much. I feel silly for not realizing that now lol but “variable aperture lens” was a new term for me haha I purchased the camera used with a prime 35mm so wasn’t used to that. Really appreciate you taking the time to respond, I live in a rural area and haven’t been able to find photography classes or anyone to really mentor me yet so I can’t stress how valuable your vids/comments are to me. Thanks again!

    Your description sounds like what another reviewer said of the 23mm f1.4 - that to bloom the background you need to shoot at 1.4 and be close to your subject. Or have something you want blurred in the foreground.

      Hello! I'm sorry you're having problems in Lightroom. It might have gotten accidentally turned off for visibility. Check in area below the photo for "Show Edit Pins" option. Then, change that to "Always" or "Auto." My guess is that it is currently set to "Never." Hope that helps!

    Subbed! Great overview . As you conveyed is common, been using this as my main walk-around if/ untill the Fuji 27 becomes more available for it's thinner profile. I put the Fuji 35 f2 on if I'm going out at night but if I'm out in the day the 27 stays on and into the night and it usually will do the trick.
